I think the linearity of the vanilla game series is fun still, but it leaves much to be desired. You can basically go anywhere in this game, and fly to new islands, use rideable PKMN to traverse the landscape or cut down trees. You make a fence to store your PKMN safely out of your party. There is a lot to it, and really you just gotta explore it for yourself.
Between the level scaling to what gym you have in that region, and resetting to a degree as if they were their own games, then having prestige levels for say like your starter or something. There could be a balance maintained to keep the harmony of what the main series feels like.
As a huge fan of the simplicity of the core Pokémon titles, I would always pick up at least one of the games at launch but once I started Pokémon Sun/Moon, my completion rate of each started to rapidly diminish. There were far too many tutorials, slowing the game’s pace to a crawl and I simply was too bored to finish most entries in a franchise that I loved. It felt like there were no lessons learned from previous games, almost as if each game was crafted ignoring any sort of criticism and was instead stamped out of a set mold. This is why I found ROM hacks so fascinating; they gave me the sort of monster-catching gameplay I was looking for in a style that I was already nostalgic for.
