• Only four pitchers have turned in a double-digit strikeout performance in a Game 7. Roger Clemens (2001 World Series), Gibson (1967 World Series), Sandy Koufax (’65 World Series) and Hal Newhouser (’45 World Series) share the record with 10.
• There have been 61 winner-take-all Game 7s, between the World Series and LCS, counting the 1912 World Series, which required an eighth game but only due to an earlier tie. Leaving out 2020 games played at neutral sites, home teams have gone 30-29, including the Astros and Phillies losses in the LCS.
In the first two innings, Boston took a quick 2–0 lead on RBI base hits from Dwight Evans and Marty Barrett. Ojeda gave up an RBI single to Marty Barrett in the bottom of the third inning, but this would be the only Boston run of the game. Carter drove in two runners with a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning, and Ray Knight drove in Darryl Strawberry, who had singled and moved to third on two wild pitches, with a double in the eighth inning off of Joe Sambito. Roger McDowell pitched the final two frames to seal a 7–1 Mets victory.

NEW YORK — Assuming the voting results for the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge go as we expect them to go (hint: they will), this is only the seventh World Series to feature that season’s two MVPs.
Yankees: Juan Soto homered and had two hits in Game 2. Of his four homers this postseason, three have given the Yankees the lead, and one has tied the game. Stanton has six homers and 14 RBIs this postseason. Rizzo has produced a .520 on-base percentage. Judge continues to slump, now 6-for-40 (.150) with 19 strikeouts during this postseason. Jazz Chisholm Jr. (.186 BA) and Austin Wells (.098 BA) also have struggled.
Beyond the team’s culpability, Rodón being unable to deliver on the sport’s biggest stage is a huge blow to the Yankees. Nights like Saturday were precisely why they signed him to a six-year, $162 million deal before the 2023 season. That he stayed healthy all year, ate up innings and delivered quality starts in half of his 32 outings when ace Gerrit Cole missed the first two-plus months of the season with an elbow injury was invaluable. Who is hot and who is not?Dodgers: Edman continues his hot hitting, following up a two-hit Game 1 with a solo homer and a double in Game 2. Freeman has also homered in back-to-back games, extending his World Series home run streak to four games.
How will the bullpens line up after the starter?Dodgers: Anthony Banda, Alex Vesia, Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen pitched in both games and could be somewhat limited heading into Game 3. Having the off-day does help, but the Dodgers will need to be mindful of the fact that they have a bullpen game lined up for Tuesday’s Game 4. But if the Dodgers take an early lead and have an opportunity to win a third game in the series, Roberts will be aggressive with his high-leverage relievers.
